Unique question regarding Desktop Icons! (It's not the - Microsoft Community

i'm in bit of predicament regarding desktop icons. (if don't care background, skip reading paragraph , go straight actual problem) for background purposes, i'll tell issue lead need solution topic. note: i'm not asking one, because i've given lol. had weird issue old windows 10 installation on ssd freeze bios @ splash screen. couldn't bios or nothing if ssd attached. remove it'd post fine. trust me, i've tried imaginable. reset bios, repair mbr, vanilla microsoft repairs, bootrec.exe, cables, more cmd wizardry, name it. anyway, thing can't boot it, , leads issue on new ssd i'd with. fresh installed on new ssd (i needed larger ssd anyway) , everything's working great on new ssd. also note,i cant boot old ssd, can access files on pc.

so here's issue:
use fences (wonderful software) , have 3-400 icons neatly set in on old ssd. that's quite few. want copy these icons new ssd save many hours adding them 1 one manually, (games , other software on other drives). i've done backup of fences snapshot , added new ssd, fences of course doesnt save actual icons, saves icons located.

and here's i've done far:
  • i've accessed old ssd.
  • copied desktop folder , every icon in folder new ssd's desktop.
  • success!
  • the icons went original locations used on old ssd fences snapshot.

  • but there's 1 problem. lot of icons missing. desktop folder on old ssd whatever reason did not include couple hundred icons had on old ssd'd desktop!

so here's people smarter me (you) come in:
there master directory or location can access on old ssd (mind can't boot it, can access drive , folders) contains every desktop icon have on it? (since actual desktop folder missing ton of icons) there plac in windows copy , add new windows installation or registry item copy old icons? windows has save somewhere right? how else windows know load icons added on desktop when reboot?
copy icons old ssd's desktop itself, can't boot it, i'm stuck here.

sorry long post, wanted provide info possible people know problem is. thanks!
  • icons on desktop (which assume applicationsyou have loaded) not stored in central windows store/location . . .

application icons individually stored each application either in exe or dll byte code - there no actual icon file

to test this, right click application (not office app) icon on desktop, choose properties, click shortcut tab , click 'change icon'

note 'look icons in file' box , see looking inside exe or dll icons associated application . . .
