i noticed yesterday desktop icons had disappeared. had finished cad session, thought perhaps had ram fragmentation or other minor issue , shut down. this evening, when booted up, saw same thing. desktop icons missing. strangely enough, labels still present , highlight , click on them. icons supposed however, it's empty space (nothing click, no selection box, nothing). on taskbar, google chrome, file explorer , notepad icons had been replaced default 'window' icon. opening computer , file explorer resulted in similar, can see below. missing icons , strange 'bullets' instead of drop-down arrows. i have gone through several forums, including 1 , have tried suggestions , none of them resolved situation: 1. ran system file checker through command prompt. got message "windows resource protection did not find integrity violations" 2. rolled recent windows updates , restarted system 3. checked make sure tablet mode

i'm running windows 10 pro on home laptop. i've got 2 monitors setup, 1 on laptop , 22" acer using hdmi output. since 1 set primary, have system tray on monitor, in keeping normal windows conventions, have icons on primary monitor. reason, seemingly @ random, when system goes sleep, windows move desktop icons other monitor. can manually pull icons primary, it's little frustrating , have believe it's fixable if causes found. the laptop sager i7-6700, 16 gb ram, 256 gb ssd, 1 tb hd. i've had happened using both intel graphics on processor external nvidia 960 video card. right click on desktop on laptop , display settings. look around , see can change things. trying load turbo tax 2016 on hp laptop running windows 10 (all latest updates installed).  after program installs, click "restart turbo tax" button, , initial window progress pops up, after minute disappears.  no error codes, no crash report, nothing in reliability monitor.  farthest progress have made 1 time made far screen enter info registering software, typing name window again disappeared.  1 , time have made past intro screen. if try use "repair turbo tax" function included install disk,  message "unexpected error.  installation cannot continue due unexpected windows installer error.  error code 65535.  the cd works fine on son's laptop running windows 7. i spent 3 hours on phone turbo tax tech support , tried performed tech said supposed to.  when tried reinstall , open same thing happened.  turbo tax tech sent me clean download in case cd corrupt no help. i tried system restore week ago (as far could).
