Not able to update 'Protection updates' - Microsoft Community

when try update protection updates. getting following error.

protection definition update failed.

error code: -2147416390

error description: programs service has stopped can start service manually or restart device, start service

note: tried 

restarting device, still face same problem.

there possibility challenges having when try download , install windows defender updates being caused corrupted system files on windows 10 computer. let further isolate issue running automated troubleshooters below:

 

background intelligent transfer service troubleshooter:

1. click on start button.
2. in search box, type control panel , press enter.
3. on upper-right corner of control panel window, type troubleshooting in search box.
4. in list of search results, click on troubleshooting.
5. on left pane of window, click on view all.
6. in list of troubleshooters, double-click background intelligent transfer service.
7. follow on-screen steps run troubleshooter.

 

windows update troubleshooter:

1. follow steps 1 – 5 background intelligent transfer service troubleshooter.
2. this time, double click windows update list of troubleshooters.
3. follow on-screen steps run troubleshooter.
