"what x best ..." matter of opinion, if hoping intellectual discussion (in group?) may disappointed. there truths, however, virtually can agree upon:

• you must use anti-malware application.
• no single anti-malware application detect and/or remove types of malware.
• you should never have 2 or more anti-malware applications scanning in background. (more on below.)
• an educated , watchful user first line of defense against malware; anti-malware software second. same token, careless use of internet defeat best anti-malware application.

about not having 2 or more applications scanning in background: anti-malware application should running time can monitor happens computer in real time. if have 2 (or more) anti-malware applications doing work against each other - less secure, not more.

there anti-malware software - popular , free version of malwarebytes - runs on-demand scan, runs when asked , closes after it's done. it's safe run on-demand scan if have application running in background.

as brand ... you. has favorite (and @ least 1 hate.) think it's important understand user interface, since best anti-malware application won't work if don't understand you're looking at.
