Windows 10 freezes during boot - Microsoft Community

hello,

(please excuse english since not mothertongue. first post here apologies in advance if not correct place)

my laptop (hp pavilion dv7 6116sg win 10) worked - apart dead battery 2 years ago - flawlessly week ago.

then froze (hard reset required) in middle of game.

a day later, froze @ beginning of game.

after hard reset, windows did not boot login screen - spinning dots freeze before should appear , hdd activity ceases.

the laptop has intel hd 3000 onboard gpu , amd radeon hd 6770m. when playing graphics-intensive games lot of heat generated , fan did not seem effective me.

safe mode still works. suspect (hardware?) problem dedicated amd-gpu.

i googled , read lot on topic, found absolutely no way verify assumption amd causes problems. did not find way regular boot.

here's tried far:

  • ram memory check (hp system diagnostics / bios): ok - passed
  • hdd smart/short/long dst: ok - passed
  • checked windows system files integrity sfc / scannow : ok - passed
  • tried deactivate fast boot via system control panel & registry: option missing on computer / made no difference
  • shutdown -g -t 0 : made no difference
  • disabled appxsvc via registry: made no difference
  • tried delete amd radeon-device device manager: made no difference
  • cmos battery check - guess must still ok since bios has correct date & time
  • tried identify driver conflicts / problems several tools drivereasy etc. - no difference
  • tried regcleaners ccleaner etc. - no difference
  • deactivated non-microsoft-services via msconfig - no difference - interestingly "diagnosis system start" (2nd option on "general"-tab of msconfig) works; similar safe mode
  • opened machine , blew dust out, esp. fan , surroundings - no difference (surprisingly, not dust)
  • checked boot log (windows event log) - said lot "dcom got error "1084" attempting start service wsearch" (and other services)
  • tried test amd gpu furmark , dxdiag - dxdiag did not mention gpu @ (no entries whatsoever!); furmark recognizes gpu data missing gpu memory size etc., looks strange , faulty me...

and more drastic measures like

  • tried restore system recovery point via win 10 uefi / troubleshoot-screen (windows starts "automatic repair" fails): windows not restore 1 of 3 existing recoveries
  • tried reset system: produced error message in troubleshoot / advanced options
  • reinstalled windows external usb device made ms media creation tool on formatted c: partition: windows installed flawlessly , booted first time. first restart fails - again freezes when login screen (hello) should appear , hdd activity ceases... arghh...

so, after several days & nights of trying find on net far close giving up.

i still have no idea if gpu-hardware causing trouble. can test somehow?

can try else laptop , running, i.e. booting normally? did miss important?

or, if else fails, can somehow tell windows use onboard intel gpu @ least can use laptop in way? bios has settings "dynamic" , "fixed mode" 2 gpus, nothing more.

(i not know yet if can physically remove or disconnect amd gpu; guess not - ask hp that)

any input/suggestion welcome! lot in advance.

hi markus,

if you’re encountering system instability issues abrupt shut downs, while doing demanding playing pc games, computer may overheating. can happen several reasons. laptop’s case may full of dust, fan may have failed, may blocking computer’s vents, or may have compact laptop never designed run @ maximum performance hours on end. if laptop never designed opened users, suggest consult computer technician further assistance.

if can else, let know.
