this morning while on facebook, wife got pop-up message, along voice message repeated again , again warning had been infected "zeus" virus. on-screen printed message told call 855.365.9955. in panic, dialed number , got heavy indian accent assured microsoft , remove "virus" $150.00.
when heard yelling, came downstairs, spent few minutes guy, thanked him , hung up. opened windows task manager , shut down internet explorer (along facebook), , ran mse full scan. when one-hour scan completed, came clean.
of mean? , did right thing? what, if anything, should next?
can reasonably sure no serious harm done computer , safe go enjoying facebook "friends"? note while did call 855 number, did not click on links. should perhaps run additional virus or malware scans? might conclude there never "virus" on computer , have avoided disaster not doing instructed "microsoft" technician on phone?
we're shaken experience.
ps: shouldn't pop-up blocker have prevented interruption? facebook perhaps dangerous web site?
it's browser exploit. scam.
yes did right thing hang up.
closing iex11 taskmanager or shutting down computer the
only way out of mess.
friendly reminder, msft nor other legitimate "technician"
ever pull stunt that.
